THE DUOMO OF MILAN – GREAT SPIRE PROJECT

The project, which began in 2009 in partnership with the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano, involved the 3D survey and modelling of the Great Spire of the Duomo of Milan. The data acquisition phase and the subsequent data processing saw the use of the most advanced instrumental and methodological techniques. The project, which had the aim of supporting the design and execution of preservation and restoration works, stimulated the advance of research on various levels, both of data acquisition and processing and their subsequent distribution.

The 3D model, which was initially used for the automatic extraction of any two-dimensional work, evolved into an information system which allows the online management of geometric, raster, vector and text data. The model accurately represents the entirety of the Great Spire in 1:20 architectural scale. The survey of the statue is represented in 1:5 scale, providing even greater precision.

The management system named BIMDUOMO can be visited using a standard internet browser and allows site workers to mark the preservation or restoration works to be carried out visually on the three-dimensional model. The information is received in real time by the technical office of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo which proceeds to update the 3D models. The system developed by the 3Dsurvey Group makes it possible to manage the Duomo of Milan sites, not only through the three spatial dimensions of the three-dimensional model, but also through the dimension of time, retracing the history of maintenance and/or restoration works of each site.
